Gymnocladus dioicus. Deciduous. Lanky, sparse and awkward when young, but if you give it time, it soon fills in with wonderfully sturdy, upright arching branches and develops an oval crown. Native to a wide range from Eastern N.A. through the south and some of the great plains. Nice shade tree for NM, tough and adaptable to our alkaline soils and dry climate with some irrigation.
Bark is gray and quite rough, with long scaly plates with upturned edges running up the trunk. Medium to slow growing up to 50-60' in height at maximum. Lovely, lush and tropical in summer appearance with a coarse, rugged winter look.
This is a fine small specimen tree, with minimal pruning and maintenance required.
